FAQ
How do we schedule a newborn session around baby’s due date?
01
We will book your session in advance so your session is reserved, even if we don't know the exact date will be until baby arrives. Add your newborn photographer to the list of people that you share the news with upon new baby's arrival. Then we will decide on the bestdate and time for photos - usually shoot mid-day (for best natural light photos indoors), about one or two weeks after baby’s arrival, at a time when the entire family can be present for photos.
Do you use props in your newborn photo sessions?
02.
In short, no. I work to create the photos I fell in love with (and still cherish mosty) with my own children - more naturally beautiful without styled props or poses. I aim to create more emotional images of baby, and connections with family members. There are Photographers that do this well, but I ditched the bean bag and my stash of knit hats years ago, and haven’t looked back.
Will you take photos of the baby, and also some of the family?
03
Yes! I wouldn’t have it any other way. Photos captured during each session are not only of the new baby in the family, but celebrating the changed family. Big brother or sister, mother with her new baby, the whole family. Beyond something for the birth announcement, these images will be an amazing gift to your baby that he or she will love, one day.
Do you shoot weddings and events?
04
Not frequently, but there are occasionally some events or intimate weddings or elopements fit my style of shooting and make come beautiful memories. Feel free to reach out.
Do you do photos for extended family?
05.
Absolutely! It’s so important to get images of generations and extended family members together; and this is usually easy to do around Thanksgiving week. Reach out in advance so we can come up with the best plan for you.
Do you do mini sessions?
06
Yes and no. Family portraits can be so beautiful and special when everyone can breathe and be themselves, and I can focus on your unique dynamic. So much meaning gets lost when we try to fit that into a short time with a hard stop. However, I will occasionally announce something special such as grandparents mini sessions, mothers day portraits, or pop-up minis when I'm in Austin or another area.
What locations do you photograph?
07
Anywhere there is good light, really. Your home in the middle of the day with window light pouring in is a favorite! The amount of nature areas, lakes, or downtown areas we could use in the Dallas-Fort Worth area are endless, and I keep an ever-changing list. There are even several natural light studios around DFW that we could rent for your photo session, with different aesthetic vibes. And I’m always up for trying a new space.
What should I/we wear?
08
Wear the the dress or outfit you feel the most confident in, and that allows movement without having to constantly pull or tug. Depending on the look we’re going for, I generally recommend neutral or soft colors and patterns. I’m happy to help with choices, or to contact a stylist to work with you.
Can we do an in-home session if we’re about to move, or just moved?
09
Yes, and I would even highly recommend it. It’s so significant and meaningful to this “moment” in your lives; it’s where you are right now. We can work around boxes, bare windows, whatever. That said, we have other options if you're just not feeling it.
What camera gear do you use?
10
I have switched from the Nikon DSLRs to a Sony mirrorless system and I love it. Usually with a 35mm or a 55m lens attached, depending on the situation.
How do you edit your photos?
11
I am a huge Lightroom nerd, for its cataloging, editing, exporting, collage-making, all the things. I have some favorite presets that I use, and I make sure compositions are straightened and distractions are removed. I do not mutate skin or scenes to be something they’re not. I rarely touch Photoshop unless I need to do some tricky cloning outside of Lightroom’s capabilities.
Will you change to color or black & white images, or vice versa?
12
The majority of my images are in color, but there are some that work better in black + white, particularly photos with more of a light and shadow story, or those where the color is more of a distraction from the feel in the image. Some sessions may have more black + white than others, but still probably about 90% color images. That said, I am usually happy to change an image from color to black + white or vice versa.
